Ted Abernathy, MD, FAAP

Dr. Abernathy attended the Virginia Military Institute where he graduated as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army. He received his Doctor of Medicine from the Medical College of Virginia. He also completed his Residency in Pediatrics at the Medical College of Virginia followed by an Adolescent Medicine Fellowship. After fellowship training he went into private practice founding Pediatric & Adolescent Health Partners. Dr. Abernathy is active in the American Academy of Pediatrics as a sitting member of the Quality Improvement Innovation Network,. He currently serves as the Chairman of the Pediatric Council for the Va Chapter of the AAP and represents the national AAP to the National Business Group on Health. He is Chairman of the Board of Pediatric Alliance, Richmond’s only Pediatric IPA.
Keith A. Derco, MD, FAAP
Vice-Chairman, Board of Directors, and Chairman Research Committee, The PACK
Dr. Derco attended the University of Pittsburgh for both his Bachelor of Science and his Doctor of Medicine. He completed a Residency in Pediatrics at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital serving as co-Chief resident (80-81). He practiced in Ft. Myers, Florida for 14 years before joining the faculty at the Medical College of Virginia. There, he directed the continuity clinic and was chair of the medical school Admission Committee among other clinical and administrative duties. In 1995, he became the founding member of Associates in Pediatrics in Richmond, a general pediatric practice. Dr. Derco is an Assistant Clinical Professor in Pediatrics for Virginia Commonwealth University teaching medical students. He is a board member of the Pediatric Alliance, Richmond’s only Pediatric IPA, and serves on the Pediatric Council of the Virginia Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics.
Peter S. Heyman, MD, FAAP

Dr. Heyman holds a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Delaware and received his Doctor of Medicine from the Medical College of Virginia. He also completed a Residency in Pediatrics at the Medical College of Virginia serving as Pediatric Chief Resident. After completion of his training, he joined and is now a partner in the practice of Drs. Overton, Wiley, Kirchmier, Terry and Rowe, P.C. He is an Associate Clinical Professor of Pediatrics for Virginia Commonwealth University teaching medical students and residents. Dr. Heyman has served on a number of community boards including Noah’s Children, Rudlin Torah Academy, and The Hayes Hitzeman Foundation. He recently served as the Chairman of the Department of Pediatrics of Bon Secours – St. Mary’s Hospital.
Joseph W. Boatwright, III, M.D, CMCM
Chairman, Planning and Logisitics Committee, The PACK
Dr. Boatwright received his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Virginia and completed a Residency in Pediatrics at the Medical College of Virginia. He is a native of Richmond, Virginia. taking pride in having practiced pediatrics for over 33 years in Jackson Ward, the same area where he was born. He has served on many community boards and commissions, most recently the Mayor’s Blue Ribbon Commission on Health Policy, the Board of Medical Assistance Services, and the Richmond Ambulance Authority. Additionally, he has consulted with civic and municipal organizations and health systems to improve access to medical homes and to reduce health disparities for the patients he serves. Dr. Boatwright is also and Assistant Clinical Professor in Pediatrics for Virginia Commonwealth University teaching medical students.
Frank Mazzeo, MD, FAAP
Chairman, Specialist Committee, The PACK
Dr. Mazzeo is a Pediatric Anesthesiologist. He received his Doctor of Medicine from the Medical College of Virginia and completed a Residency in Anesthesiology at the University of Virginia. He completed additional fellowship training at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Canada. He was on staff at All Children’s Hospital in St Petersburg, FL. In addition to being one of the founding members of the Congenital Heart Institute of Florida, which serviced the busiest congenital heart program in the state of Florida where he was an active participant in Medical Staff affairs including serving as Chief of Surgery, Chair of OR Utilization Committee, Surgical QA Committee and many others. Prior to returning to Richmond he was an Associate Professor of Anesthesiology and Pediatrics at the University of Virginia. He currently a pediatric anesthesiologist with West End Anesthesia Group at St. Mary’s Hospital.
Judith P. Grossberg, MD, FAAP

Dr. Grossberg holds a Bachelor of Science from the University of Virginia and a Doctor of Medicine from the Medical College of Virginia. She completed a Residency in Pediatrics at the Medical College of Virginia. Additional post-graduate training includes a Fellowship in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the Virginia Treatment Center for Children and the study of Environmental Psychology at Cornell University. She is currently a partner with Huguenot Pediatrics in Midlothian. She is an Associate Clinical Professor in Pediatrics for Virginia Commonwealth University teaching medical students and residents. She is a board member of Pediatric Alliance, Richmond’s only Pediatric IPA, served for many years on an Advisory Board to the VCU Department of Pediatrics and now serves on an Advisory Board to Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU.
Carol Genese Bascomb Williams, MD, FAAP
Treasurer and Chairman, Philanthropy Committee, The PACK
Dr Williams holds a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Virginia and received her Doctor of Medicine from Howard University. She completed a Residency in Pediatrics at the Medical College of Virginia. After residency she joined Charity Pediatrics followed by joining the Theresa Thomas Medical Center in Hanover, In 2000 she founded Hanover Pediatrics, which has recently aligned with Bons Secours. Dr. Williams serves as Member of ADHOC, an advisory panel to the Dean of the University of Virginia, and was recently selected to be a Trustee of IDEA, by the Vice President and Dean of the Office for Diversity, as an advisor to the Board of Visitors. She also serves on the Richmond Mayor’s Breast Feeding Commission. Dr. Williams is a Assistant Clinical Professor in Pediatrics for Virginia Commonwealth University teaching medical students and residents. In addition she has served as a mentor for pre-med students for the University of Virginia and Randolph Macon College. She is a past Vice Chairperson for the Department of Pediatrics for Bon Secours – St. Mary’s Hospital.
Melissa Nelson, MD, FAAP

Dr. Nelson received her Bachelor of Science at Virginia Tech and her Doctor of Medicine from the Medical College of Virginia. She completed her residency training at Cornell University Medical Center at the New York Presbyterian Hospital. She has additional fellowship training in Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics from the Rose F. Kennedy Center at Albert Einstein University. After completing her training, Dr. Nelson joined the faculty at New York Presbyterian Hospital and at the Hospital for Special Surgery. In 2004, Dr. Nelson moved to Richmond, Virginia where she joined Pediatric Associates of Richmond, Inc. She has served as the Chairman of the Department of Pediatrics of Bon Secours – St. Mary’s Hospital and currently serves on the Medical College of Virginia’s Alumni Board of Directors. She is an Assistant Clinical Professor in Pediatrics for Virginia Commonwealth Universty teaching medical students and residents. Dr. Nelson was also the VCU student representative to the Board of Visitors 1997-98.
David A Lanning, MD, PhD
Surgeon-in-Chief, Children’s Hospital of Richmond
Dr. David Lanning completed medical school at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) and subsequently obtained a PhD there as well. He also completed his general surgery residency at VCU prior to completing a 2-year fellowship in pediatric general and thoracic surgery at the Children’s Hospital of Michigan. He returned to VCU in 2004 to join the Department of Surgery and has since been promoted to Associate Professor and Surgeon-in-Chief of the Children’s Hospital of Richmond. Dr. Lanning has expertise in pediatric general and thoracic minimally-invasive and robotic surgery and is very active as a volunteer surgeon and vice chairman of the Board of Directors for the World Pediatric Project.
William Lennarz, Chief Medical Officer, Pediatrics Vice President, Children’s Services Bon Secours Virginia Health System
Dr. Lennarz is in charge of Pediatric program development, physician recruitment and quality oversight of pediatrics in a 7 hospital state-wide system, including a tertiary care children’s hospital within a hospital model at Bon Secours St. Mary’s. Strategic development and alignment of children’s services to achieve the formation of a comprehensive acute care children’s hospital serving central Virginia. He functions as the system Vice President level with oversight and responsibility for all pediatric care in Virginia as well as advisory role to the 5-state, 14 hospital Bon Secours USA System, based in Marriottsville, Maryland.
